Asian Development Bank has invested 500 million dollars to clean up the river. Plans called for removing waste from 8 districts and 3 cities. A public education program would also be implemented so the residents could learn how to care for the river. By November of 2011, the government invested 3.5 billion dollars on the Rehabilitation Program. The Rehabilitation Program is targeted to cover 180 kilometres of the river. But this still won't stop the people from still using the river as a dumping ground. Every week, a barge will collect all the waste from the main districts and cities. This barge will prevent the residents from throwing garbage into the river and will also be much more efficient than garbage trucks. In the next 15 years, The Citarum River will be clean enough for drinking, cooking, and agriculture. I believe that the residents living along the river should produce less waste and learn how to recycle and reuse. Much of the waste in the river is recyclable. |
My Opinion
It all comes down to education. Providing education to every citizen of this world will benefit us all. Education will lead to a clean and healthy environment, population control, and better jobs.
Building schools in every village, town, or city is necessary. Most of the people in this world don’t receive education because they don’t have access to schools. If the government builds school in every village, town, or city, no one in this world will be uneducated.
The government should also build recycling centres and landfills near over crowded villages. If the government had build recycling centres and landfills in the first place, they wouldn’t have to pay billions of dollars to clean the river.
We all can help. Small things such as, not polluting the environment will contribute to a clean and healthy Earth. Little by little we all can clean the Earth.
